What does the future of broadcasting entail?

It seems to me that traditional broadcasting is at a crossroads. With the recent influx of independent, non-conventional media outlets such as podcasting, video sharing, and everything else that the Internet has brought us, the mainstream entertainment industry is scrambling to get on the cutting edge of Internet-based technology and on-demand entertainment. What do you predict the future of broadcasting will entail?

  1. Just my opinion, but: Satellite radio is not doing well because everyone has an ipod. An Ipod is "entertainment on demand". And who wants a monthly bill? It comes down to business models, not technology. Internet radio is not doing too well either now because stations want more royalties.
  2. I agree with Barney A. Also, the FCC has made it easier for small, low power FM stations to be licensed and go on the air. This allows for niche programming for specialized audiences that also pull listeners away from convention broadcasting. Also, many broadcasters, particularly TV, don't seem to understand that all the commercials help drive listeners away. They seem to think listeners are obligated to listen to or watch their commercials and they keep cramming more and more in. It's self defeating. With TV especially, management is trying to figure out how to make people pay attention to commercials, not allowing them to skip them on a DVR, etc. This will just drive more viewers away.
